Recent international events have highlighted the need for a reliable, fast and flexible tool to facilitate the continuous forecasting of organisations’ planned operations. The demise of a number of Australian businesses have also highlighted the need for senior managers and directors to be provided with accurate modelling of the effects of their decisions for the future wellbeing of their organisation.

SuperModeller has been developed to meet these needs.

It is a financial modelling tool that is mainly used for budgeting, continuous forecasting, long range planning, reporting, consolidation and feasibility studies. SuperModeller is primarily used by business analysts, accounting and finance executives who often work with financial models that are too large and complex for an ordinary spreadsheet system. SuperModeller enables planning systems to evolve with organisations’ information needs.

SuperModeller works on a rules basis. Any corporate / business rule can be written into the SuperModeller system and applied throughout an entire application. This allows extreme flexibility and tailorability in clients’ solutions.

SuperModeller provides reliable, fast, flexible modelling with a complete Windows look and feel, the integrated package combines the functions of spreadsheets, databases, a programming language and a report writer but with vastly superior performance and capabilities.

Innovation

SuperModeller is unique in the Windows environment. Extensive web and literature searches by Econsult and others have failed to find any equivalent product. Several of our clients, including Orica, have told us that they undertook a worldwide search and were unsuccessful until they came across SuperModeller.

There are a number of products advertising themselves as being budgeting tools that overcome the problems of Spreadsheets. Most of these are based on multi-dimensional databases but lack SuperModeller's flexibility, speed and in-depth analytical capabilities.

SuperModeller has been in the market for over two years. The technology has been proven with over twenty clients and hundreds of users throughout Australasia. In addition to our client base, we have established a small network of resellers throughout Australia. We are currently establishing overseas Resellers in New Zealand and South Africa.

SuperModeller has been recognised by early acceptance in the ATS (Australian Technology Showcase – initiated by the NSW State Government for the Olympic Games but continuing as a national scheme) and accreditation as an EDS Global Partner.

Econsult Management Consultants, the owners of SuperModeller, are IBM Business Partners, Microsoft Certified Partners and a member of the AIIA (Australian Information Industry Association). 

SuperModeller was a finalist in the 1999 Small Business Show, Best Business Software competition.

Potential

In 2001, we saw the first OEM (original equipment manufacturer) relationship when Econsult and Ultradata (provides technology solutions to the financial services industry) joined forces. With the reliability and versatility of SuperModeller, members of Econsult and Ultrdata, were able to tailor the software to meet the particular needs of Australian Financial Institutions. We hope this will be the first of many OEM partnerships.

We have begun our international expansion and are currently in the process of setting up resellers in South Africa and New Zealand. Targeted areas also include Singapore, U.S.A, Europe and The UK. We plan to extend our Reseller network worldwide.

According to information in the OLAP Report, Gartner and IDC the worldwide market for OLAP solutions will be at least $A10 Billion in 2003 and growing.

We are developing an OLAP/BI addon to SuperModeller to be released shortly.

The combination of a modelling tool together with an OLAP/BI addon to provide both historic and projected solutions would give SuperModeller the potential to dominate the OLAP/BI market, especially as no existing vendor currently dominates.

As the SuperModeller imports and exports with most systems, further opportunities include the integration with existing software vendors.

Other information the judges should know

Econsult was founded in 1982 as a management consultancy by four ex-Coopers and Lybrand consultants. The practice concentrated on providing financial modelling solutions to medium and large organisations in both the public and private sectors using specialised British DOS-based software.

In the mid-1990s Econsult began research into developing a windows based modelling software product and discovered a niche market opportunity existed. In 1996 product development began on SuperModeller, a windows-based financial modelling software product. Since then Econsult has set up reseller relationships and established a client base of more than 20 medium and large organisations in both the public and private sectors, including brand name companies.
