Product Description

EnviroSys is an environmental information management product. It is a powerful, high capacity data warehousing system that enables the retrieval and storage of all types of field-monitored data for analysis, alarming, reporting and measuring against thresholds.

Completely web-enabled, EnviroSys stores time series and static data types, images, audio, video, and electronic documents and files which have been collected by both external monitoring devices and field-workers. EnviroSys allows data to be measured against national and international standards and guidelines and generates alarms based on exceedances.  Reports are generated both for internal use and for submission to regulatory bodies.

EnviroSys includes both spatial and non-spatial tools for analysis and maintenance of data and adheres to standard ISO14001 for environmental management. The strength of this high-performance system is its flexibility, allowing user definition of monitoring programs, sites, tests, criteria, guidelines and data in a single package. Data may include such types as water quality, waste, air quality, climate and rainfall, soil, noise, biological and personal, but there is no limit to the types that may be configured. EnviroSys includes direct interfaces to MS Office, GIS tools, end user reporting tools, statistical analysis tools and more specific health and safety, environmental and mining/exploration applications.

Innovation

Awareness of the impact of industrial activity on the natural environment is higher than ever before. In order to properly understand the impact of these activities, we need to be able to measure, record and analyse it over a meaningful period of time.  By doing this, we can act to prevent or limit the detrimental side-effects of activities like mining, manufacturing and consumer activity by modifying behaviour or introducing new methods and processes.

Companies that are able to understand and manage their impact on the environment will be able to comply with regulatory environmental standards and guidelines. In many areas, regulatory bodies require detailed reports from industrial companies that contain accurate and comprehensive data on aspects of soil, water and air quality. As well, a company will need to be aware and act immediately should certain environmental standards be exceeded. Understanding data trends over time is also critical to the effective management of environmentally impacting activities.

EnviroSys, by acting as the data-warehousing core of an organisation’s environmental management systems,  enables businesses and other organisations to have close-to-realtime knowledge of monitored environmental conditions.  It also enables them to understand trending over any period of time of monitored conditions. This is a pre-requisite for businesses to stay within mandatory regulatory limits for such things as air, water and soil pollution levels. Businesses that cannot manage this leave themselves open to penalties and potential image problems which may affect their profitability.

Until now, environmental monitoring and data analysis has tended to occur piecemeal, whereby each monitored condition has its own monitoring device, database (often a spreadsheet) and analysis tools.  EnviroSys continuously and automatically accepts data from any number and type of monitoring devices. Data types (eg. Soil quality, air pollution levels, chemical levels in water, etc.) can be configured by the user and there is no limit to what may be measured and then analysed using the built-in statistical tools.

EnviroSys is built on a J2EE-compliant  platform which means it is accessible across an enterprise by any authorised user, using a web browser.

Performance

EnviroSys is currently in operation within BHP Billiton’s Iron Ore Division across a number of mine sites in Western Australia. The user base includes Perth, Port Hedland, Newman, and contract mine sites in the Pilbara region.

The flexibility of EnviroSys is demonstrated by listing the disparate data types BHP Billiton has configured  within the application:

The implementation of EnviroSys at BHP Billiton has enabled the company to protect its Occupational Health and Safety accreditations and ISO14001 (Environmental Management Systems) accreditation.

EnviroSys has quarterly product updates which customers can choose to receive and implement if they wish.  It is maintained by a dedicated team of developers, testers and analysts within SRA Information Technology.

EnviroSys has been developed as an open, standards compliant product. Being J2EE compliant, it is accessible by authorised users via a web browser from anywhere in the enterprise.  Running on an Oracle database platform, it exhibits all the   fault tolerant and redundancy features that are provided by Oracle.  Performance levels are limited only by the choice of hardware and architecture and not by the application software.

Potential

EnviroSys has been developed as an open, standards compliant product. Being J2EE compliant, it is accessible by authorised users via a web browser from across the enterprise. It currently runs on an Oracle database platform, chosen for its ubiquity and demonstrated performance and fault tolerance.

Based on sales of EnviroSys, SRA Information Technology won the Northern Territory Exporter of the Year Award in the 2004 Northern Territory ICT Awards run by the NT Chapter of the Australian Information Industry Association and the Australian Computer Society.

Potential markets have been identified and SRA Information Technology is currently talking to companies in the mining, airports and water utilities industries.  The Australian market is seen as holding great possibilities for EnviroSys.

SRA Information Technology has participated in a small number of trade missions. Interest has been shown in EnviroSys by mining concerns in Asia and a strategy is being put into place to enter these markets.  The worldwide resources boom being lead by China and the associated demand by mining companies for support systems is of particular interest to SRA Information Technology.
