MEDIA RELEASE
Innovation Consensus
- Innovative Australian & New Zealand software developers honoured -
SYDNEY, 6th May 2008 - The Hon Dr. Brendan Nelson, Leader of the Opposition today presented nine awards to the highly innovative winners of the 2008 Consensus Software Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel. The Awards were co-presented by Mr. Norbert Haehnel, director developer & platform strategy group, Microsoft Pty Ltd, and Mr. Michael Graf, Regional Manager, ISV & Developer Relations, IBM Australia/New Zealand.
Now in their 9th year, the Awards honour excellence and innovation and are proudly sponsored by Microsoft, IBM, Bartier Perry and BDO Kendalls. They are endorsed by Austrade, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and the New Zealand Computer Society.
At the fun-filled Awards ceremony, Dr. Nelson, launched the second volume of 'Australasian Software Excellence - 2006/2007 Consensus Software Awards' authored by Bhuvan Unhelkar. The 250-page book, has a Preface written by Mr. Kumar Parakala, National President of the ACS, with a chapter on each of the finalists and winners of both the 2006 and 2007 Awards. It will be distributed worldwide by Austrade. Volume III, which will feature the 2008 finalists and winners will be published later in the year.
"The Consensus Software Awards are recognised as the preeminent awards for software developers. Publishing this valuable keepsake will help to ensure these innovative developers receive the credit they deserve on the world-wide stage. The quality of nominations grows each year and 2008 has produced yet another crop of outstanding software solutions, ready to take on the world", said Julian Day, managing director of Consensus Pty. Ltd.
Already recognised as something of a crystal ball for anyone wanting a glimpse of the future of the Australian software sector, the Consensus Software Awards can also claim to have achieved significant advantage for previous winners. There are a host of developers that have now gone on to achieve great results overseas. This has a lot to do with the performance-based judging criteria used to decide the winners, but it also has a lot to do with the fact that a Consensus award doesn't begin and end with a hand-shake on awards night.
Keith Brady, Partner of Consensus, said "The practice of offering targeted support services to finalists and winners, to help them better exploit their opportunities and reach their potential, has added real value and real substance to these awards. We provide assistance and introductions to venture capital, marketing services, industry development and a network of excellent contacts".
"Judging of the 2008 Awards was conducted by over 50 industry experts who judged each product on its own merits and are allowed to confer as many awards as they wish. Our judges expressed great satisfaction with not only the quality of the products, but also the professionalism of each presenting finalist", added Mr. Brady.
The 9 Awards this year we presented for the following software. Full Judges citations follow.

This year, Microsoft gave the Microsoft Global Potential Award to South Australian-based Strategic Data Management for their PocketPhrase software which allows parents and teachers of children born with autism spectrum disorders to provide content and visual resources that are appropriate for each child - and make that content available on an electronic device such as a hand-held PC, laptop or TabletPC. PocketPhrase may well revolutionise support for autistic children, their carers, families, and clinicians as it can free the child from the burden of carrying and relying upon large folders and other tools. A significant component of the PocketPhrase solution is to provide an online community forum where parents and carers can share the artifacts they create, and download those created by others in the PocketPhrase community.
